What haze, a lone lamp post and a lighted building under a starless sky do to inspire the Gotham lover in me.

Discovery Bay Ferry Leaving Central Piers – 2010, originally uploaded by The Lady of the Lens.
Living in Lamma Island requires me to take the ferry every time I decide to take a break from paradise. The scene in the photo above greets me every time I go into town to do some serious shopping and hobnobbing. Isn’t it beautiful? But not long ago this scene was a saving grace to me more than it was a thing of beauty. Because soon as I see the IFC building from the Lamma ferry window, I knew that it would only be a few minutes more until I reached safety and stable ground. You see, I’m famous for my motion sickness. I can hardly go to Baguio without throwing up sometime during the journey. So you can just imagine my hesitation and fear when my husband, my beloved, sweet husband, decided to settle us in Lamma Island.
But since HK was to be one of my many adventures with my husband, I decided to stow away my fears and hop on that ferry to our island paradise. So, after 2 years of hopping in and out of ferries I no longer have to shut my eyes and force myself to sleep every time it leaves the dock. I also no longer stumble and wobble my way off the pier every time I get off a ferry like a drunkard.
Talk about small personal victories.

Twice the Fun 2009 – Ocean Park, Hong Kong, originally uploaded by The Lady of the Lens.
Everybody say “wheeee!!!!”. Before there was Disneyland, Ocean Park ruled the Hong Kong amusement park scene. It’s actually a whole other animal. With exciting rides, cable cars, performing sea life this ancient gem as endured!

Disney Magic, originally uploaded by The Lady of the Lens.
When it comes to taking photos, nothing gets me as excited as photographing fireworks. There’s something magical about the feeling of capturing something truly fleeting. Not to mention the anticipation of seeing the photos for the first time as soon as the show ends.
With my camera on a tripod I would fidget and adjust the camera’s settings. I pray to the Photography Gods that I don’t overlook anything. I fervently hope that I don’t mess up. Then the show would begin. While pressing my shutter as fast and as synchronized (with the fireworks) as I could, I would make sure that my camera doesn’t shake. And when the show ends, I sigh in relief.
Depending on the length of the show, I would sometimes walk away with 100 shots or more (this includes the test shots); and like opening presents on Christmas morning, I would excitedly check each shot, mentally patting myself on the back for a job well done (or kicking myself in the head for botching up the whole thing).
But in the end, you realize that the goal is not taking the photo, it’s improving yourself and your technique each time you step behind the lens. And there, dear friends, is where the magic really lives on.

Raker 2009, originally uploaded by The Lady of the Lens.
Caught this person (man?) raking the sand in Hung Shing Yeh Beach in Lamma Island. I don’t know why he was raking the sand, probably to sift out any sharp objects or broken glass? I was a pretty good thing that I caught him pretty much alone because the beach was crowded that day – and I mean crowded (imagine running teenagers, screaming kids, and the barbeque crowd – including us)! So it was quite a miracle that no one was behind him, around him and on top of him at this moment.
More next time.

I found this cat lounging on the roof across from our flat. He stuck his tongue out at me. Bad.
