I stumbled upon the work of the sculptor, Ron Mueck this afternoon – and it has been a long time since I’ve been blown away. He isn’t Madame Tussuad, mind you. Ron Mueck’s work is insanely realistic and, in my experience, emotionally jarring. His sculptures are either scaled down from the actual size or made bigger to either heighten the experience or the shock value – depending on who you’re talking to.

According to his bio, he started working as creature-maker in Jim Henson’s outfit. Not a bad way to start a career, huh? So from realistic muppets to outlandish mixed-media sculptures, Ron Mueck has gone a long way.

Walking through the Main St. of Lamma late last year, I chanced upon this wonderful piece of artwork. And like love, it can be found in the most unexpected places. In this case, the side of an old abandoned building (recently, a Turkish resto opened here and the graffiti was painted over. I’m so happy that I was able to take a photo of it before it disappeared).

All together now: “I HEART HK!” Let’s give this mosaic at Yau Ma Tei some love!

There’s a whole row of these, about 20 if I remember, in some back alley from the Yau Ma Tei MTR station leading to Dundas Street. I chose this coz it had “Love HK”. Don’t you just feel the love?

P.S. I don’t remember ever seeing dolphins in Victoria Harbour though. I guess the mosaic artist had a little too much happy juice.

These things greeted me as I headed out of IFC this afternoon. I have no idea what they are, but they look pretty interesting. These things actually turn with the wind, sort of like circular wind vanes. I think the idea of this installation is to have the illusion of movement with the color. But then again, maybe not. Oh well, who cares.
